How my centre uses digital technology

In my centre we use a range of digital technology. We allow the children to use a list of different technology such as: computer, printer, camera, iPod, stereos, laminating machine and most recently the Ipad. These resources are all displayed in our centre and the children just ask before they are able to use the technology. The children are all encourage using and exploring the technology first before so they are able to discover how different things work. They are using their problem solving skills and communication with the other children. Most recently we have got two new Ipad in our centre. As the world is evolving and technology is advancing it is important to provide children the opportunity to engage in using digital technology. Educators need provide opportunity for children develop understanding of technology and development skills to learn how things work(Ministry of Education, 2007, p.32) Although we have two Ipads in our centre we encourage children to play outdoor or with the other children first. We don't want children getting attached and only wanting to play on the Ipad.

educational game for children.
Children can learn lots of new skills through the use of the Ipad. Apple which is the Ipad creator has creates a website to show parents and teacher different ways the Ipad can be used in education. (link-http://www.apple.com/education/ipad/apps-books-and-more/) at my centre we use the Ipad for games, photos, painting, reading and collaging. The Ipad is a great tool for children as it provides many different uses in one object. When children are able to use the Ipad for different uses they start to understand that “different technologies may be used in various places and settings” (Ministry Of Education, 1996).
Children all in a group exploring the iPad.

The Ipad also is a research device. In my centre they children have been very interested in this new movie despicable me 2. They children came into our centre and were talking about it all week. So I and some of the other teacher decided to search what it was. We found there was an app called minion rush on the Ipad for the children to play. The internet is a dangerous place as there are some bad things on there. We have put blocks on the Ipad sop that it is safe for the children when they are using it. We talked to the children about the internet before we got the Ipad and we remind them about what to do if something t hey weren’t searching for pops up. The New Zealand Curriculum talks about the use of the internet and how it is important to teach children about cyber safety and how they can keep safe online (Ministry of Education, 2007).

What next

The children enjoyed this game so much that one of the teachers suggested we create our own map. We see that the Ipad is an extension of children’s learning it is getting them to think and use their imagination. In my second reflection you can see the children expanding from using the Ipad to search for photo and then printing them.

  1. Hi Rachel, I like how your centre provides different types of digital technology for the children to use and explore, and that it is accessible to them whenever they want.
I agree with you on how the world is evolving and so is technology. A lot of centres these days are bringing in the iPad to use and explore as it is a modern piece of technology. With my centre, we don’t have an iPad, computer or camera available for children, so they are not really being exposed to too much digital technology at school. Most children have these things available at home but the only digital technology they have at school is the CD play, so what you and your centre staff are providing for the children at school is really great.
I find that that what you have written about the iPad is interesting and true. I have been to other centres and noticed what the iPad has to offer. The iPad is very convenient, and it’s nice to see that all children are able to explore and learn about the many things it provides, such as the developmental games, internet, camera, and the different apps that offer many learning opportunities for children and also teachers.

  2. Hey Rachel, it’s great to see the new technology being used such as the Ipad in your centre. The Ipad is interactive, and children love the idea of touching things, and the ipad does just that!. I like how you have informed the children of the dangers and what they can do to prevent anything from showing up provided there is supervision. I love the application, minion rush and it’s great for children to build their skills of thinking fast. It’s great to see you trying to extend on their learning by coming up with your own game. It’s good to see you have a variety of technology for the children to use so they can understand what each thing is used for and their function. How often are these used? Technology is remotely changing all the time, but there should be time for children to go outside and just be children and play so I’m happy to see that they don’t just sit on the Ipad all the time!

  3. Hi Rachel,
from reading your blogs I can see your centre is very involved in technology and allows the children access to such things, which is think is wonderful! it really shows how children are valued as capable and competent learners. I found it interesting that before the children could use the iPad they needed to play outside first, and thought i might suggest to you that maybe you could get a sand timer, that allowed children 3 or so minutes on the iPad as a way for the children to monitor this themselves? I love all of the ways you identified the iPad as a learning tools and thought it was great that the children don't just use it for gaming, but can engage in stories and developing ICT skills such as power points. I noticed your reflections have talked about the children's love for minions and thought maybe you can help the children to create a story about minions using the iPad. Awesome work :)

  4. Hi Rachel :)
This was a very nice reflection to read about the use of the IPad at your centre.
I like that at your centre there are many different types of digital technology readily available for the children to explore whenever they would like. I also like that teachers firstly encouarge children to participate in other areas of play such as in the outdoors before they are given the IPad to play with.
I like that you have talked about the many apps available for children on the IPad, both for educational and entertainment purposes. Its nice that teachers at your centre can quickly access the internet with the IPads and look for things that the children are interested when unsure of what they are.
I also like that you and the teachers at your centre have taken the time to educate the children about the dangers of the internet and have also put up security settings that block inapproprite content or ask for a password to be accessed
    Well done Rachel
